What is Comhairle na nÓg?
“Comhairle na nÓg (Youth Council) provides a forum for children and young people from each Local Authority area to discuss local and national issues of relevance to them.”
What do members of Comhairle na nÓg do?
Members of Comhairle na nÓg hold regular meetings to discuss important issues. Members attend meetings/ seminars/ workshops etc. to represent the voice of young people in the country. Members also meet with counsellors and discuss their concerns and opinions.
When was Comhairle na nÓg set up?
Comhairle na nÓg have been established since 2002 by City/ County Development boards in each 34 Local Authority areas throughout the country under an imitative from the National Children’s Strategy to provide an opportunity for young people, under 18 years of age, to have a say in issues that affect their lives. It is composed of representatives of secondary schools, youth organisations and hard to reach groups.
Why was Comhairle na nÓg established?
Gaol 1 of the National Children’s Strategy is to give a voice to young people. Comhairle na nÓg was set up in response to the Strategy. Comhairle na nÓg create participation for children and young people in decision making and local democracy. Comhairli members have played substantial roles in developing local and national policies.

How do I get involved in Offaly Comhairle na nÓg?
You can get involved by contacting Niamh Dowler at the contact details below or attending the Theme Selection nights happening in October to participate in this Year’s Comhairle na nÓg. Theme Selection nights take place where students come together with youth workers and decide what matters are most important top them that they want to focus on pursuing and discussing for the year. So if you feel strong about what’s happening or indeed not happening around you, please come along to the Theme Selection nights where we will decide on Themes for the people who will represent Offaly Comhairle.
